The 7 IITs are the most prestigious engineering educational institutions in India. They were established with the sole purpose of providing international standards of excellence in Engineering education. The IT-BHU at Varanasi and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad were established later.
Admission to these institutions is based on the IIT-JEE. As per IIT-JEE-2005, the eligibility and exam procedure is as follows.

(b) Qualification: Successful completion of +2/equivalent examination with 60% marks each in Chemistry, Physics and Maths or a pass in a 3-4 year diploma recognised by AICTE or a State Board of Technical Education or pass in the first year examination of a degree course of any recognised Indian University following a Higher Secondary Examination in the 10+1 system or pass in the final examination of the two year course of Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy or pass in the General Certificate Education (GCE) Examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) Level or High School Certificate of Cambridge University. Pattern of JEE:
Test comprises an objective type paper of 2 hour duration in Maths, Physics and Chemistry.
Only TWO Attempts
Ranking is based on marks obtained in the Main Examination. Question papers are in English/Hindi. The candidate can choose to answer in any of the following languages - Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Oriya, Punjabi, Sindhi, Tamil, Telegu and Urdu.
